Wim Delvoye

Daphnis & Chloë (Clockwise and Counterclockwise)

2009

Bronze
165 x 80 x 80cm (each).

Inspired by Auguste Moureau’s original 19th century Daphnis & Chloë sculpture, Wim Delvoye is interested in making things that have a twist to them, sometimes a literal one. Here he amplifies the spiralling movement of an entwined couple in two different ways: clockwise and counterclockwise. While the piece relies upon the use of digital technology, the ‘twisted works’ are made according to old casting methods – the original model is scanned from all angles in high resolution, then the file is modified and printed in 3D. Daphnis and Chloe (Clockwise and Counterclockwise) accentuates the circular movement found in the original works.
