Ozymandias Foundation

Siwa, Egypt

The Ozymandias Foundation will be established in Siwa, Egypt, 560km West of Cairo. The foundation builds on art projects already conducted at the historical Oasis, such as Cai Guo Qiang’s Man, Eagle, Eye in the Sky (2003) and Emil and Ilya Kabakov’s Ship of Tolerance (2005), it will produce ten major art projects in ten years, all site-specific to the Egyptian desert.

The first is currently being planned and researched by Doug Aitken (b. 1968, Redondo Beach). It will make use of the distinctive fabric of the landscape in its construction. The foundation’s name draws inspiration from the eponymous poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley of 1818.
