Richard Woods’ Standing Timber series are a manifestation of ‘worked’ or ‘man handled’ timber. The name implies that the works are earmarked as stock, ready for purpose, and the bright colours and geometry also hint at a machined product or commodity.
“For me, I see the works in a similar way as a trip to the timber yard; that wood is displayed in manageable workable chunks. It is important therefore that the totem works then get placed back in amongst the landscape…back amongst growing trees.” Richard Woods
The bright, geometric and synthetic language of Woods’ sculptures are therefore contrasted and informed by the physical, natural beauty of the growing woodland. The works intend to emphasise a nurturing, harvesting, and reinvesting relationship that we have with the land.
